Student Guidebook

I also designed a student-facing guidebook, offering practical advice and step-by-step suggestions for initiating conversations with trusted adults. The layouts were intentionally clean and easy to follow, balancing accessible text with engaging visuals to maintain student interest.

This campaign demonstrated the power of thoughtful visual storytelling and user-informed design in supporting mental health awareness among young audiences. View some pages from the guidebook in the gallery below.

OVERVIEW

The JED Foundation partnered with the NYC Department of Education to launch Let’s Talk NYC, a campaign designed to raise mental health awareness in schools by encouraging open conversations between students and staff. The goal was to empower students to speak up about their emotional well-being and equip school staff with tools and training to support them.

I was responsible for the visual design, layout, and custom illustration of several campaign materials targeting students, caregivers, and educators. Early in the process, we conducted initial testing with student groups using concept mockups. The overwhelming favorite was a comic book-inspired visual direction, which felt familiar, friendly, and non-intimidating to students. Based on this feedback, I developed a series of posters using expressive illustrations and bold layouts that reflected the energy and diversity of NYC’s student population.
